New York Straus Park

Bronze figure titled "Memory"

gazing into the reflecting pool

in Straus Park was sculpted by Augustus Lukeman

and dedicated on April 15, 1915

Straus Park is named for Isidor Straus and his wife Ida,

who died on April 15, 1912 when the S.S. Titanic sank on

its maiden voyage from England to America.

Lion Head, on the side of the "exedra"

(where the reclining figure is placed)

All parts of design have significance.

I think this lion's head shows

the strength of those who died, since

sources on the Titanic's history show

that there were many brave who tried

to save lives, even as they knew

they were about to die.
